FINANCING
Your project. Your way to pay.
Compare cash, loans, and PPAs. Start with what you want to own, what you can pay upfront, and the total cost over time.
Cash and loans can support many home upgrades. PPAs are for solar energy; they are not a financing option for a standalone roof, window, or HVAC project.
Cash
Pay upfront. Own your upgrade.
Pay the project price with your own funds. You own the equipment without a financing payment.
Pros
- No loan interest or financing fees.
- You own the equipment from the start.
- No lender approval or long-term financing agreement.
Cons
- Largest upfront expense; leaves less cash available for other needs.
- You handle maintenance and repairs beyond warranty coverage.
What to consider
Consider cash if you want ownership and can pay without stretching your budget.
Loans
Own it. Pay over time.
Borrow to purchase the equipment, then repay the lender under an agreed schedule. Available projects and terms vary by lender.
Pros
- Spread the purchase cost over time.
- Keep more of your savings available upfront.
- Own the equipment while repaying the loan.
Cons
- Interest and fees can increase the total project cost.
- Approval, credit requirements, and repayment terms apply.
What to consider
Compare the cash price, APR, amount financed, total payments, and any prepayment terms—not just the monthly payment.
PPAs
Buy the solar energy.
A solar power purchase agreement (PPA) means a provider owns the system and you pay for the electricity it produces at a contracted price per kilowatt-hour.
Pros
- Often requires little or no upfront system payment.
- The provider generally handles system maintenance under the contract.
- Access solar production without purchasing the system.
Cons
- You do not own the system; ownership-related incentives generally go to the provider.
- Annual rate increases, if included, can raise future payments.
What to consider
Compare the starting energy rate, annual increases, contract length, maintenance coverage, and transfer or buyout terms.
